Child Support and Child’s Employment
Does my child’s employment affect my child support in the state of Oklahoma? I’m told it’s Attorney James Wirth, and that’s a question we’ve got. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard that question, but presumably it does come up somewhat. Child support can go not only through the age of 18, but it can also go later up to the age 21 if they’re actively enrolled in high school. If we’re talking about kids at 16 that start working, getting a job, they’re getting their own money in, the question you might think is, how does that affect child support?
The answer is, it doesn’t affect it at all. Child support is based on the income of the parents, not based on the income of the child. So that is not gonna be a basis to file to modify, and if you’re getting a new child support order in place, it won’t be factored in whatsoever. So that’s the simple answer to that question. If you’ve got more complicated questions related to child support in the state of Oklahoma, you’re probably gonna wanna talk to a Tulsa attorney privately and confidentially about that.
