Pay Attention in Court: Tips for Success
How important is it to listen when you’re in court? My name is Carl Birkhead. I’m a Tulsa attorney with Wirth Law Office. I’ve been practicing for about seven years, mainly doing family and criminal law. I want to help you make law easy by giving you some tips and tricks for navigating the courtroom process, especially, in this instance, paying attention.
A lot of the videos that I record about what to do in court seem rather self-explanatory, but it’s a lot easier said than done. It is so important that you pay close attention to what is happening in court, especially on days when you’re there for a trial. There are times in family or in criminal cases where you’re just there for a procedural matter and there’s not much that’s required from you other than actually appearing.
Stay Alert During Court Proceedings
But there are also times when it’s absolutely crucial that you not only appear but are ready to testify. You must pay attention either way, even on times when it doesn’t seem like you need to be there. I’ve had clients miss crucial details, including when their next court date was, just because they’d be on their phone, playing Fruit Ninja, or whatever the kids are playing these days.
Next court date, they didn’t show up because they weren’t paying attention. I’ve had clients in the middle of being questioned on the stand. They would maybe not fully understand the question being asked. They would give way too much information and ultimately end up implicating themselves in some kind of bad action that the court on the other side didn’t even know about. Just pay attention.
